Celine's Commitment to Charity
The Celine Dion Foundation
The Celine Dion Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports various charitable organizations and medical foundations, with a focus on helping sick or underprivileged children. Staff workers are voluntary, therefore 100% of the monies received are appropriated to charity.
In August 2011 the second ‘Céline pour les enfants’ fundraising event was held at Le Mirage Golf Club in Quebec, Canada. This event, organized for the benefit of The Celine Dion Foundation was attended by Celine and René, as well as several other celebrities such as Pierre Dion, President of the TVA Group, and famous lyricist Luc Plamondon. Part of the money raised came from ticket sales to the event, which generated thousands of dollars. The generous participants enjoyed a great day of golf, a gourmet dinner followed by a Celine concert, with Véronic DiCaire as the opening act. An auction was also held during the evening. The 10 exceptional items that went up for bid included tickets for Celine’s Las Vegas show, an evening dinner with chef Mario for 16 people in Celine and René’s private room at Le Mirage Golf Club, a canvas by Canadian painter Corno and a round of golf with René followed by a gourmet dinner at Celine and René’s residence in Florida. The event raised three million dollars for The Celine Dion Foundation, a goal set by Celine.
Cystic Fibrosis Canada
Celine Dion began promoting public awareness of cystic fibrosis back in 1982. Since those early days of her career, Celine’s commitment to the CF cause has remained a constant part of her life.
That commitment is marked by real life tragedy. Celine was in the room when her niece, Karine, succumbed to the disease at the age of 16.
Celine began supporting the CF cause at the regional level by collaborating with the Cystic Fibrosis Quebec (CFQ) – the Foundation’s provincial arm in Quebec. She helped spread the CF message by participating in media interviews, CFQ public service campaigns and fundraising activities. In August of 1993, Celine strengthened her commitment by graciously accepting the Foundation’s invitation to be its national Celebrity Patron. As part of her increased involvement, Celine participated in the Foundation’s Canada-wide public awareness campaign, from 1994 to 1997. The central message of this campaign – featuring Celine and Chanelle Lemieux Lecavalier, a child with CF from Hull, PQ – was one of both hope and urgency. Hope, that a cure or an effective control for cystic fibrosis will be found. Urgency, for continued public support is required to realize this goal.
In addition to promoting public awareness of the CF cause, Celine generates significant revenues for cystic fibrosis research and treatment from Canadian and international sources, and has generously donated to the Foundation her appearance fees from several concerts and guest appearances. In 1996, Celine helped the Foundation to secure an important new sponsorship with Royal Airlines.
There is no doubt that Celine’s immense popularity, both in Canada and internationally, will continue to benefit the CF cause. As her songs reach a wider audience all over the world, she is now in a position to appeal to the generosity of a greater number of people. Each year and each step of her involvement have brought us closer to victory against cystic fibrosis.
CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation
In December 2002, Celine and René accepted their new role as spokespersons of the Growing Up Healthy campaign of the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation, a hospital specialized in the treatment of sick children in Montreal, Quebec. They visited with sick children at the hospital and Celine recorded a TV commercial to bring attention to this cause. As part of their mandate, Celine and René helped raise $125 million dollars in donations from the public for the hospital’s development plan.
In December 2012, Celine and René renewed their commitment by supporting the Healing More Better campaign which is the hospitals biggest campaign to date. As honorary lifetime patrons of the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation, they are helping to spread a message of hope and inviting the public to join together to support the largest mother-child centre in Canada to raise a total of $150 million by 2018.
On July 16, 2014, Celine performed with winners of the ‘Sing for Sainte-Justine with Celine Dion’ contest benefitting CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation
The Sainte-Justine Hospital’s mission includes care, research and teaching, with a firm commitment towards children and mothers.
Celine and Rene are Thinking Pink in Support of Breast Cancer Research!
Celine and Rene were sporting 2005’s specially designed shirts in support of breast cancer research, education and awareness. The women’s and men’s pink polo shirts which featured the pink breast cancer ribbon were created by Canadian designer, Simon Chang. 100% of the profits for the sale of these t-shirts were donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation. Celine supports this cause and encourages you to Think Pink.
